Keep safe over the
holidays and through winter

The emergency management services unit has advice for Joburgers planning to leave the city for the Easter holidays. It also has a few tips on keeping safe through the cold winter months.

IT'S the holidays and many Joburgers head out of the city for the Easter weekend. To keep these travellers safe, Johannesburg's emergency management services (EMS) has some tips for motorists - as well as advice on how to get through the winter safely.

For those taking long road trips, the EMS advises the drivers to rest often during their journeys. Motorists are also advised to ensure that their cars are roadworthy, to drive at the speed limit and to switch on their headlights when the daylight is poor.

If they are not home during the holidays, the EMS advises pool owners to cover their pools with nets, to make sure access to the pool is locked and to keep chemicals out of children's reach.

As winter approaches, the unit also encourages Joburgers to be more cautious during the cold months. "Take out your electric blankets and heaters and make sure that the cables and connections are in good working condition," reads a statement from the unit. "Also check [gas] cylinders for leaks and have cylinders refilled at approved sites."

Malcolm Midgley, the EMS spokesperson, said, "[People] should not use stoves or parts … for heating and make sure that these [stove and heater] are on firm surfaces or are standing on a non-flammable or sandy base."

He also said that people should not take braziers or any other type of fire indoors.
