YEOVILLE residents have benefited from Pikitup's latest clean-up campaign. Operation Fiela ensured that the suburb, in the city's east, was supplied with 240-litre wheelie bins.
The project was aimed at dealing with the waste collection problem experienced by local businesses and residents of flats and houses. These people did not have the large rubbish bins that are now standard across the city.
"After an extensive survey, 500 domestic refuse bins were delivered in Yeoville," says Tseliso Pitikoe, Pikitup's Selby Depot manager.
Operation Fiela followed research conducted by the City's waste management company earlier this year on rubbish collection problems. It found that illegal dumping on empty stands and street corners was a major problem.
As part of the clean-up campaign, Pikitup is also providing street bins to counter roadside litter, Pitikoe says.
"Operation Fiela is meant to address Yeoville's shortage of 240-litre bins, concrete street bins and street cleanliness; 30 street bins were issued in main streets."
The company has identified the Yeoville market as an area of concern. Here traders spill into the street. "The Yeoville market has been issued with skip bins. The problem areas are the surroundings, where informal trading has overspilled on to pavements on Raleigh Street," Pitikoe explains.
"The Johannesburg metropolitan police department and the department of health has expressed concern and are busy with blitzes in the area. We, however, constantly remove illegal dumping created by these traders."
Pikitup is urging residents to play their part and be aware of the environmental effects of illegal dumping. The utility is working with local community bodies to identify problem areas, to which law enforcement officers can be deployed.
"We have subsequently done surveys in Forsdburg, Doornfontein and Betrams and a further 1 200 bins are scheduled for delivery," Pitikoe concludes.
Residents are encouraged to report any illegal dumping to Pikitup's call centre on 011 712 5200 or to Joburg Connect on 011 375 5555.
